About the Music
Commissioned by and dedicated to the "Real Filharmonía de Galicia" (Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Galicia) and its principal conductor and artistic director, Baldur Brönnimann. First performance was given by the Real Filharmonía de Galicia (Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Galicia), conducted by Baldur Brönnimann at the Galicia Concert Hall, Santiago de Compostela, Spain, February 28, 2026.
Spin is a small word for a fundamental mystery. At the heart of the most elementary particles, hidden in the silence of the vacuum, there is a dance that can neither be seen nor halted: an inner rotation, without form or axis, that defines the identity of matter. As though each particle carried within itself a memory of motion, a primordial turn that links the infinitely small with the universal gesture of the stars.
With this programmatic pretext in mind, Spin unfolds around a series of six variations — preceded by a brief introduction in which the thematic material to be varied is presented in a fragmented encapsulation. With each variation, the degree of ornamentation applied to the material increases, exploring different modal permutations and densities within the current orchestral fabric. This thematic material is the Epitaph of Seikilos, considered the oldest surviving complete musical work, discovered near Tralles (in present-day Turkey) between the 1st century BCE and the 1st century CE. Its inclusion is justified within the initial programmatic premise as an allusion to the primordial element in the form of dance.
