The title of this composition refers to a quote from Friedrich Nietzsche's Beyond Good and Evil (Jenseits von Gut und Böse), written in 1886, which I reproduce below:
"When you gaze long into the abyss, the abyss also gazes into you."
Aphorism 146, where this quote appears, is not presented within a specific narrative or argumentative context but as a standalone meditation that invites reflection. The sonic discourse seeks to evoke a sense of continuous transformation, woven through subtle processes of metamorphosis. These processes extend to all parameters of the composition: rhythm, timbre, register, density, and also the harmonic plane—rooted in the spiral modulation of the initial polychord.
At every moment, the music draws a parallel between Nietzsche's "inner abyss" and the "outer abyss" —towards which the entire sonic discourse seems to gravitate inexorably— the hidden mystery veiled at the heart of darkness, the collapsed singularity at the center of the black hole, the ultimate boundary of our reality.
Esta composición obtuvo el Primer Premio 'Xavier Montsalvatge' y el Premio Especial 'Juventudes Musicales de España' en el prestigioso XXV Premio Jóvenes Compositores Fundación SGAE-Centro Nacional de Difusión Musical, España, 2024. El estreno fue llevado a cabo por el ensemble VIGO 430, dirigidos por Lara Diloy en el Auditorio 400 del Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, España, el 18 de noviembre del 2024.
El título de esta composición hace referencia a una cita proveniente de la obra 'Más allá del bien y del mal' (Jenseits von Gut und Böse), escrita por Friedrich Nietzsche en 1886 y que reproduzco a continuación:
“Cuando miras fijamente al abismo, el abismo también mira dentro de ti.”
El aforismo 146, donde aparece esta cita, no se presenta con un contexto narrativo o argumentativo específico, sino como una meditación autónoma que invita a la reflexión. El discurso sonoro pretende generar una sensación de transformación continua, hilvanada a través de sutiles procesos de metamorfosis. Procesos que se extienden a todos los parámetros de la composición: el ritmo, el timbre, el registro, la densidad, y también el plano armónico - que parte de la modulación espiral del poliacorde inicial.
En todo momento, la música establece un paralelismo entre el “abismo interior” nietzscheano y el “abismo exterior”— hacia donde todo el discurso sonoro parece gravitar inexorablemente— el misterio oculto veladamente en el corazón de las tinieblas, la singularidad colapsada en el centro del agujero negro, la frontera final de nuestra realidad.
