First performance was given by the Meaño Musical Union Wind Orchestra (BUMM), conducted by Diego Javier Lorente, at the Ribadumia Municipal Concert Hall, Spain, February 21, 2016.
BUMM is a concert pasodoble written for wind orchestra. The origin of this passionate form of music is disputed, although it shares characteristics with the march form. The facts known about it, due to physical historical evidence, are that it was being written as early as the 18th century, as Spain has pasodoble scores dating back to 1780. It was incorporated into comedies and adopted as a regulatory step for the Spanish infantry, but it was not introduced into bullfights until the 19th century. Its most common structure is adjusted to the march form, which is: (Introduction) — AA — BB — TRIO piano — Dogfight — TRIO forte — (Coda). The sections between brackets are flexible, and sometimes the A (First Strain) is repeated before the first TRIO, completing a small ternary form.
BUMM is an acronym formed from the initials of the full name in Spanish of the institution that powered the contest, Banda Unión Musical de Meaño (Meaño Musical Union Wind Orchestra). Its original title was Elena Rodríguez, the name of my mother, to whom this composition is affectionately dedicated. However, the rules of the composition contest did not allow me to keep the original title after I had obtained the first prize. With BUMM, I have closed my discrete incursion into this passionate musical form, as I feel that I have nothing more to say or add to it. Therefore, this is the last piece of a trilogy that I started with Enrique López in 2012 and continued with Prost! in 2014. It synthesizes both works — introducing certain Mahlerian touches — and brings a possible answer to them.
Esta composición obtuvo el primer premio en el Concurso de Composición de Pasodobles del XXV Festival de Bandas de Meaño, España, 2016. El estreno se llevó a cabo por la Banda Unión Musical de Meaño (BUMM) bajo la dirección de Diego Javier Lorente, en el Auditorio Municipal de Ribadumia, España, el 21 de febrero del 2016.
BUMM es un pasodoble de concierto escrito para orquesta de viento. El origen de esta apasionada forma de música es discutido, aunque comparte características formales con la marcha. Los hechos conocidos – por evidencia histórica – son que se escribía a finales del siglo XVIII, ya que en España existen partituras de pasodobles fechadas en 1780; incorporándose primeramente a las comedias y adoptado luego como paso reglamentario por la infantería española; no siendo introducido en la tauromaquia hasta el siglo XIX. Su estructura más común se ajusta a la forma de marcha, es decir: (Introducción) — AA — BB — TRÍO piano — Puente — TRÍO forte — (Coda). Las secciones entre paréntesis son flexibles y a veces puede encontrarse una repetición de A (Primer Tema) antes del primer TRÍO, completando así una pequeña forma ternaria.
BUMM es un acrónimo formado por las iniciales del nombre completo en español de la institución que impulsó el concurso, la Banda Unión Musical de Meaño (BUMM). Su título original era Elena Rodríguez, el nombre de mi madre y a quien afectuosamente está dedicada esta composición, pero las bases del concurso no permitían conservar el título después de haber obtenido el primer premio. Con BUMM, he cerrado mi discreta incursión en esta apasionante forma musical, siempre y cuando sienta que no tengo nada más que decir o aportar. Por lo tanto, esta es la última pieza de una trilogía que comencé con Enrique López en 2012 y continué con Prost! en 2014, sintetizando en ella ambos trabajos — introduciendo ciertos 'guiños' mahlerianos — y aportando una posible respuesta a los mismos.
